“Did We not expand for you your chest?
And We removed from you your burden,
Which had weighed upon your back,
And raised high for you your mention.
For indeed, with hardship comes ease.
Indeed, with hardship comes ease.
So when you have finished [your duties], then stand up [for worship].
And to your Lord direct your longing.”

“Did We not expand for you your chest?”
Allah, the Exalted, addresses His Prophet Muhammad ﷺ , reminding him of His grace and kindness toward him. In doing so, He encourages him to show gratitude for these blessings so that he may be granted even more.
Meaning: Did We not expand your chest, O Muhammad—illuminating it, making it open, spacious, and at ease? We made it broad enough to carry the responsibilities of the religion, to call others to Allah, to embody noble character, to turn toward the Hereafter, and to find ease in performing good deeds.
“And We removed from you your burden”
That is: We forgave you your past sins and lifted from you the burden and weight of the days of ignorance (Jahiliyyah) in which you once lived.
“Which had weighed upon your back”
It weighed him down so heavily that its creaking—its very sound—could be heard; an expression used to convey the intensity and heaviness of the burden.
“And raised high for you your mention”
That is: Allah placed in the hearts of his الأمة (nation) a deep love, reverence, and honor and veneration for the Messenger Muhammad ﷺ—greater than for anyone else after Allah, the Exalted. So may Allah reward him, on behalf of his nation, with the best reward ever granted to a Prophet for his people.
“For indeed, with hardship comes ease”
This is glad tidings from Allah for His Messenger and for his nation. The Prophetﷺ experienced hardship—during his time in Mecca when he was under pressure, in Ta’if, and also in Madinah with the hypocrites. Yet Allah fulfilled His promise to him and made his affairs easy. He did not pass away until the regions of Hijaz and Yemen were opened for him, his means were greatly expanded, and he would give a man hundreds of camels and grant immense gifts, while also storing provisions for his family for a full year.
“So when you have finished, then stand up (for worship)”
When you have finished your worldly matters and engagements, and have set aside their distractions, then devote yourself fully to worship. Rise to it with energy, a clear mind, and sincere intention—directing your longing and desire to your Lord alone.
Some scholars have said: when you complete your prayer, then {fansab}—that is, strive earnestly in supplication, and ask Allah for your needs with sincerity and humility.
“And to your Lord direct your longing”
Make your intention and your longing directed to Allah, the Almighty and Majestic.
Why is “with hardship comes ease” repeated?
In Arabic, repeating a definite word refers to the same thing, while repeating an indefinite word indicates different things.
