Best Surahs for Protection: Quranic Verses for Safety and Peace
Table of Contents
A servant is in constant need of trust, reassurance, comfort, and tranquility—and there is no true comfort or serenity except through the remembrance of Allah. For this reason, Allah Almighty says:
“The believers are only those who, when Allah is mentioned, their hearts tremble; and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith; and upon their Lord they rely.” (Al-Anfal: 2)
Shaykh al-Islam رحمه الله and other scholars used to encourage people to recite the verses of tranquility (Ayat al-Sakinah), due to their remarkable effect on bringing stability, peace, and firmness to the hearts of believers. Through them, Allah repels the plots of Satan, humiliates the enemies of the faithful, restrains the rebellious devils, and increases the believer in trust in his Lord and certainty in His promise.
In a world filled with uncertainties, many Muslims all over the world like New Muslims in Canada search for the best surahs for protection. The Qur’an offers this profound sense of protection, not only from visible harm but also from unseen fears, anxieties, and spiritual disturbances.

List of the Best surahs for protection in the Quran
The entire Qur’an is goodness and blessing, and among this goodness are the surahs and verses of protection that the Prophet ﷺ informed us about. Among the best surahs for protection are :
- Surah Al-Baqarah
- Surah Al-Ikhlas, and the two Mu‘awwidhat (Surah Al-Falaq and Surah An-Nas)
- The last verses of Surah Al-Baqarah and Ayat Al-Kursi (Verse 255 of Surah Al-Baqarah)
- Surah Aal ‘Imran, safeguard the servant on the Day of Judgment.
It is reported in a hadith:
“Recite Qul huwa Allahu ahad (Surah Al-Ikhlas) and the Mu‘awwidhat three times in the evening and in the morning; they will suffice you against everything.”
In another authentic narration, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Do not turn your houses into graves. Indeed, Satan flees from a house in which Surah Al-Baqarah is recited.”
Also among best surahs for protection is the recitation of the ending of Surah Al-Baqarah. It is authentically reported in the hadith of Abu Musa Al-Ansari that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:
“Whoever recites the last two verses of Surah Al-Baqarah at night, they will be sufficient for him.”
Furthermore, the Prophet ﷺ said:
“Allah wrote a book two thousand years before He created the creation, from which He revealed two verses with which He concluded Surah Al-Baqarah. They are not recited in a house for three nights except that Satan will not come near it.”
Also among the best surahs for protection are Surah Aal ‘Imran along with Surah Al-Baqarah, as they safeguard the servant on the Day of Judgment.
In the hadith of Abu Umamah رضي الله عنه, he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say:
“Recite the Qur’an, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions. Recite the two radiant ones (Az-Zahrawayn): Al-Baqarah and Surah Aal ‘Imran, for they will come on the Day of Resurrection as if they were two clouds, or two shades, or as if they were two flocks of birds in rows, pleading on behalf of their companions. Recite Surah Al-Baqarah, for taking it is a blessing, and leaving it is a regret, and the magicians cannot withstand it.”

Allah—there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission?
He knows what is before them and what is behind them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. His Kursi extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. And He is the Most High, the Most Great.

Spiritual Benefits of Reading Protective Surahs
The Qur’an is described as a source of healing and mercy. Reciting the best surahs for protection and verses of peace offer numerous spiritual and emotional benefits:
1. Inner Peace and Calm
Calamities may be a path that leads one closer to Him, and a means of coming to know Him—just as Allah تعالى says: “Indeed, We will test you with something of fear and hunger…” And at that point comes the glad tidings: “But give good news to the patient.”
We will certainly test you with a touch of fear and famine and loss of property, life, and crops. Give good news to those who patiently endure— (Al-Baqarah: 155)
2. Strengthened Faith
Everything is in the hands of Allah. If people were to gather to harm you, they would not harm you except by Allah’s permission.
Allah the Almighty says:
“Say: O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and You take sovereignty away from whom You will. You honor whom You will and You humble whom You will. In Your hand is all good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.” (Aal ‘Imran: 26)
3. Clarity of Mind
Learn the vastness of Allah’s mercy—so read His words: “And My mercy encompasses all things, but I will decree it especially for those who are mindful of Me, give zakah, and those who believe in Our signs.” (Al-A‘raf: 156)
4. Protection from Harm
While physical measures are important, spiritual protection complements them by safeguarding against unseen dangers. Similar to what happened in the story of Abu Hurairah with the devil:
Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه said:
“The Messenger of Allah ﷺ appointed me to guard the zakah of Ramadan. Then someone came and began scooping food. I caught him and said: ‘By Allah, I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.’ He said: ‘I am in need, I have dependents, and I am in great hardship.’ So I let him go.
In the morning, the Prophet ﷺ said: ‘O Abu Hurairah, what did your captive do last night?’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, he complained of severe need and dependents, so I felt pity for him and let him go.’ He said: ‘Indeed, he has lied to you, and he will return.’ I knew he would return because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said so.
So I waited for him. He came again scooping food, and I caught him and said: ‘I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ .’ He said: ‘Leave me, for I am in need and have dependents, and I will not return.’ So I had mercy on him and let him go.
In the morning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: ‘O Abu Hurairah, what did your captive do?’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, he complained of severe need and dependents, so I felt pity for him and let him go.’ He said: ‘Indeed, he has lied to you, and he will return.’
So I waited for him a third time. He came scooping food, and I caught him and said: ‘I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ . This is the third time—you claim you will not return, yet you return!’ He said: ‘Leave me, and I will teach you words by which Allah will benefit you.’ I said: ‘What are they?’ He said: ‘When you go to your bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi: Allahu la ilaha illa huwa al-hayy al-qayyum (Al-Baqarah: 255) until you finish the verse. There will remain over you a guardian from Allah, and no devil will approach you until morning.’ So I let him go.
In the morning, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: ‘What did your captive do last night?’ I said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, he claimed that he would teach me words by which Allah would benefit me, so I let him go.’ He said: ‘What are they?’ I said: ‘He told me: when you go to bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi from beginning to end: Allahu la ilaha illa huwa al-hayy al-qayyum (Al-Baqarah: 255), and he said: a guardian from Allah will remain over you, and no devil will come near you until morning.’
The Prophet ﷺ said: ‘He told you the truth, although he is a liar. Do you know whom you have been speaking to for the past three nights, O Abu Hurairah?’ He said: ‘No.’ The Prophet said: ‘That was the devil.’”
These benefits make the practice of reading the best surahs for protection an essential part of a balanced spiritual life.
