What Is Qalqalah?
Al-Qalqalah, linguistically, means shaking or disturbance.
Idiomatically,
Al-Qalqalah refers to causing a letter with sukoon (a saakin letter) to loud sound without any corresponding mouth movement until it becomes turbulent, producing a clear vibration and a distinct tone.
It represents a state between a saakin (a letter with a sukoon sign) and a mutaharrik (a letter with a movement).
The term “Qalqalah” describes the echoing sound produced when pronouncing Qalqalah letters.
This rule is applied when a sukoon sign appears on one of the Qalqalah letters, which we will explore shortly.

The Qalqalah Letters In Tajweed
The Qalqalah letters in Tajweed are conveniently grouped in the phrase “قُطب جَد” (Qutb Jad), which includes the five letters:
ق (qaaf), ط (tah), ب (baa), ج (jeem), د (daal)
To create the Qalqalah letters effect, a saakin letter (one with a sukoon sign or assigned a sukoon due to stopping) is disturbed or echoed.
This can occur whether the letter is in the middle or at the end of a word, without giving it the movement it would have in the case of connection.
Essentially, Qalqalah is the echoing of these five letters when they are in a state of sukoon:
قْ طْ بْ جْ دْ
Qalqalah Rules
Like everything else, there are specific Qalqalah letters rules to apply in Tajweed.
There are a couple of conditions for a letter to produce the Qalqalah sound:
- The letter must be one of the five Qalqalah letters: ق (qaaf), ط (tah), ب (baa), ج (jeem), د (daal).
- The Qalqalah letter must be saakin, meaning it has a sukoon on it, and can occur either in the center or at the end of a word.
- If the Qalqalah letter has a fatha, kasra, dummah, or tanween on it, it does not produce an echoing or bouncing sound and is pronounced normally.
