Preparation for Eid al-Adha: What to Know
As Eid al Adha 2025 approaches, Muslims around the world prepare to mark one of Islam’s holiest celebrations. The Festival of Sacrifice is both a commemoration of the obedience of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and a call to remembrance of submission, gratitude, and giving by the faithful.
Preparation is key to getting through the day as laid out in the Islamic faith and through unity and commitment of the heart.
1. Spiritual Preparation
The time leading up to Eid al Adha 2025, especially the first ten days of Dhu al-Hijjah, is some of the most sacred in Islam. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“There are no days on which righteous deeds are more beloved to Allah than these ten days.” Sahih al-Bukhari, 969
Muslims are encouraged to do additional deeds of worship in this period such as fasting, prayer, reading Quran, and remembrance of Allah (dhikr).
Fasting on the Day of Arafah (9th Dhu al-Hijjah) is very recommended for non-Hajis as it purifies past sins and the year to come (Sahih Muslim, 1162).

2. Qurbani (Sacrifice)
One of the primary activities during Eid al Adha 2025 is the slaughter of an animal such as a sheep, goat, cow, or camel. This commemorates Prophet Ibrahim’s readiness to sacrifice his son in obedience to Allah’s command. The Quran says:
“And when he reached [the age of] exertion, he said, ‘O my son, indeed I have seen in a dream that I [must] sacrifice you. So see what you think.’ He said, ‘O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me, if Allah wills, of the steadfast.'” Surah As-Saffat (37:102)
Qurbani must be performed after the Eid prayer on the 10th, 11th, or 12th of Dhu al-Hijjah. The animal must meet Islamic requirements and the meat is divided fairly—one-third to the household, one-third to relatives and friends, and one-third to the needy and poor.
3. Preparation for the Eid Prayer
Eid prayer in the congregation is obligatory (Sunnah Mu’akkadah) and performed immediately after sunrise. Muslims are requested to attend it in congregation, wearing their best clothes, and perfume, and going on foot to the prayer area if possible.
Common Rituals on the Day of Eid
Eid al Adha 2025 will be observed on the day with some very important practices that reflect the religious, social, and humanitarian spirit of Islam. These practices, according to the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and the practice of Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), are performed by Muslims worldwide with respect and solidarity.
1. Ghusl and Wearing the Best Available Attire
On Eid al Adha 2025, Muslims ought to do their ghusl (ritual bath), and perform Wudu, and it’s important to understand what is wudu and dress in their finest modest clothing.
Perfuming and cleanliness are also part of prophetic practice, which is a symbol of inner and external cleanliness. The Prophet ﷺ dressed in his finest clothing on Eid and would tell others to do the same
2. Going for the Eid Prayer
Among the centerpieces of acts throughout the Eid al Adha 2025 is praying the congregational Eid prayer, consisting of two rak’ahs and khutbah. It is mostly conducted in numbers at mosques or open spaces near dawn.
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ never missed the Eid prayer and obligated even children and women to attend it:
“The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) used to go out to the prayer place on the day of Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.” Sahih al-Bukhari, 956
3. Slaughtering the Qurbani (Sacrificial Animal)
After the Eid prayer, the eligible Muslims who are in a position to do so perform the Qurbani, or the sacrificial slaughter of an animal. This is done in commemoration of the complete surrender of Prophet Ibrahim (AS).
The sacrifice has to be done on the 10th or the 12th of Dhu al-Hijjah, after the prayer, according to the Sunnah. Allah says in the Quran:
“Their meat will not reach Allah, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is piety from you.” Surah Al-Hajj (22:37)
The sacrifice meat is divided into three parts: one for the family, one for relatives or friends, and one for the needy.
4. Saying the Takbeer
From dawn on the Day of Arafah to sunset on the last day of Tashreeq, Muslims are encouraged to say the Eid Takbeer lyrics:
“Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar, La ilaha illa Allah, Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar wa Lillahil-hamd.”
The Takbeer should be done frequently in Eid al Adha 2025, especially before the Eid prayer and during sacrifice days, as a means of glorifying and giving thanks to Allah. It’s also important to understand if is eid salah fard or not.
5. Time with Family and In Charity
Eid is a period of joy and gratitude. Muslims are encouraged to spend time with their families, share meals together, visit relatives, and be kind to neighbors. Charity to the poor is also a significant aspect of Eid, reiterating compassion and community spirit.
The Prophet ﷺ stated: “The best of people are those that bring the most benefit to the rest of mankind.” Musnad Ahmad, 23408
