ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ ٱلْحَىُّ ٱلْقَيُّومُ ۚ لَا تَأْخُذُهُۥ سِنَةٌۭ وَلَا نَوْمٌۭ ۚ لَّهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ ۗ مَن ذَا ٱلَّذِى يَشْفَعُ عِندَهُۥٓ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِهِۦ ۚ يَعْلَمُ مَا بَيْنَ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَمَا خَلْفَهُمْ ۖ وَلَا يُحِيطُونَ بِشَىْءٍۢ مِّنْ عِلْمِهِۦٓ إِلَّا بِمَا شَآءَ ۚ وَسِعَ كُرْسِيُّهُ ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٰتِ وَٱلْأَرْضَ ۖ وَلَا يَـُٔودُهُۥ حِفْظُهُمَا ۚ وَهُوَ ٱلْعَلِىُّ ٱلْعَظِيمُ ٢٥٥ – البقرة

Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa al-ḥayyu al-qayyūm, lā ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm, lahu mā fī as-samāwāti wa mā fī al-arḍ, man dhā alladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahu illā bi-idhnih, yaʿlamu mā bayna aydīhim wa mā khalfahum, wa lā yuḥīṭūna bishay’in min ʿilmihi illā bimā shā’, wasiʿa kursiyyuhu as-samāwāti wa al-arḍ, wa lā ya’ūduhu ḥifẓuhumā, wa huwa al-ʿaliyyu al-ʿaẓīm.

Here is the translation:

Allah! There is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him, the Ever-Living, All-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who could possibly intercede with Him without His permission? He ˹fully˺ knows what is ahead of them and what is behind them, but no one can grasp any of His knowledge—except what He wills ˹to reveal˺. His Seat1 encompasses the heavens and the earth, and the preservation of both does not tire Him. For He is the Most High, the Greatest.

Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said:

 “Whoever recites Ayatul Kursi after every obligatory prayer, nothing will prevent him from entering Paradise except death.” (Narrated by al-Nasa’i)

Allah — there is no true god besides Him. The word “Ilah” means the one who is worshipped, and “ta’alluh” means worship and devotion.

Al-Hayy —  perfectly alive with a life that is complete and free from any imperfection, weakness, heedlessness, sleep, drowsiness, death, or any other defect.

Al-Qayyum — in ayatul kursi transliteration this word means the One who manages the affairs of His servants, who sustains them, who maintains His creation, and who preserves them. The existence of the servants and all creation depends entirely on Him.

lā ta’khudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm: this means that He never dies, and He is never overtaken by drowsiness (which is the light form of sleep) nor by sleep (which is deeper than drowsiness), because of the perfection of His life. Rather, He possesses perfect life, complete knowledge, full power, and absolute awareness of the conditions of His servants.

lahu mā fī as-samāwāti wa mā fī al-arḍ: He is the Owner of all things — the heavens and everything within them, and the earth and everything upon it.

man dhā alladhī yashfaʿu ʿindahu illā bi-idhnih: meaning of ayatul kursi transliteration teaches us no one will be able to intercede except with His permission — on the Day of Judgment, no one will be allowed to intercede, not even Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, will not intercede for us except after receiving permission from Allah, then, and only then, will the prophet ﷺ be able to intercede for us. wa lā yuḥīṭūna bishay’in min ʿilmihi illā bimā shā’: they only know what He teaches them — what He reveals to them through the messengers (peace be upon them) or what He allows them to witness in this worldly life of His creation, provision, and other matters He shows them.

wasiʿa kursiyyuhu as-samāwāti wa al-arḍ: the Kursi is a mighty creation above the seventh heaven, beneath the magnificent Throne (Arsh) of the Most Merciful. The most sound opinion is that the Kursi is the footstool of Allah, and the Throne is greater than the Kursi.

The Throne (Arsh) is the greatest of all creations. Our Lord rose above it in a manner that befits His Majesty. It has pillars, and it is carried by powerful angels with immense creation. It is like a dome over the universe — the ceiling of all creation and also the ceiling of Paradise. It is the roof of the entire universe, and above it is nothing except Allah.

wa lā ya’ūduhu ḥifẓuhumā: (This refers to protection of the heavens and the earth), it does not burden, exhaust, or cause Him any hardship to preserve the creation. Ayatul kursi transliteration let us understand that Allah is the Guardian of the heavens and the Guardian of the earth and everything within them, and this causes Him no difficulty whatsoever.

wa huwa al-ʿaliyyu al-ʿaẓīm: This refers to His absolute highness — the highness of His essence above the Throne, the highness of His power and authority, and the highness of His honor and status. He possesses complete and perfect highness — above all His creation, above the Throne, and exalted in His Names, Attributes, authority, and power.

Stories from Hadith About Ayatul Kursi

In addition  to ayatul kursi transliteration, there is a famous hadith that highlights the ayatul kursi benefits . This is the one which tells us a story of Abu Hurairah رضي الله عنه when he caught a thief stealing from charity. Narrated by Abu Huraira:

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ entrusted me to guard the zakat (charity) of Ramadan. Then someone came and started taking handfuls of food (from it). I caught him and said, “By Allah, I will take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!” He said, “I am needy, I have dependents, and I am in severe need.” So I let him go.

In the morning, the Prophet ﷺ said to me, “O Abu Huraira, what did your captive do last night?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah! He complained of great need and family responsibilities, so I felt compassion for him and let him go.” He said, “Indeed, he lied to you, and he will return.”

So I waited for him, and he came again and began to take food. I caught him and said, “I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ!” He said, “Leave me, for I am in need and have dependents. I will not return.” So I felt compassion for him and let him go.

In the morning, the Prophet ﷺ said, “O Abu Huraira, what did your captive do last night?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah! He complained of great need and dependents, so I let him go.” He said, “Indeed, he lied to you, and he will return.”

So I waited for him a third time, and he came again and took handfuls of food. I caught him and said, “I will surely take you to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. This is the third time, and you claim you will not return, yet you keep coming back!”

He said, “Let me go, and I will teach you some words by which Allah will benefit you.” I said, “What are they?” He said, “When you go to bed, recite Ayatul Kursi (Allah! There is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of [all] existence) [Surah Al-Baqarah: 255] until the end of the verse. A protector from Allah will remain with you, and no devil will come near you until morning.” So I let him go.

In the morning, the Prophet ﷺ said to me, “What did your captive do last night?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah! He claimed he would teach me words by which Allah would benefit me, so I let him go.” He said, “What were they?” I told him what he said.

The Prophet ﷺ replied, “He told you the truth, even though he is a liar. Do you know who you were speaking to for the past three nights, O Abu Huraira?” I said, “No.” He said, “That was the Shaytan (Satan).” This hadith is narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari.
