وَوَالِدٍ وَمَا وَلَدِ
Wa waalidin wama walad
(And [by] the father and what he begets)
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا الْإِنسَانَ فِي كَبَدٍ
Laqad khalaqna al-insana fee kabad
(We have certainly created man in hardship)
أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَقْدِرَ عَلَيْهِ أَحَدٌ
Ayyahsabu an lan yaqdiru ‘alayhi ahad
(Does he think that no one has power over him?)
يَقُولُ أَهْلَكْتُ مَالًا لُّبَدًا
Yaqoolu ahlaktu maalan lubada
(He says, “I have spent a lot of wealth.”)
أَيَحْسَبُ أَنْ لَنْ يَرَاهُ أَحَدٌ
Ayyahsabu an lan yaraahu ahad
(Does he think that no one sees him?)
أَلَمْ نَجْعَلْ لَهُ عَيْنَيْنِ
Alam najal lahu ‘ainayni
(Have We not made for him two eyes?)
وَلِسَانًا وَشَفَتَيْنِ
Wa lisanan wa shafateyn
(And a tongue and two lips?)
وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ
Wa hadaynahu an-najdayn
(And guided him to the two paths?)
فَلَا اقْتَحَمَ الْعَقَبَةَ
Fala aqtahama al-aqaba
(But he has not attempted the steep pass.)
وَمَا أَدْرَاكَ مَا الْعَقَبَةُ
Wama adraka ma al-aqaba
(And what can make you know what is the steep pass?)
فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
Fakkur aqabah
(It is the freeing of a slave.)
أَوْ إِطْعَامٌ فِي يَوْمٍ ذِي مَسْغَبَةٍ
Aw it’amu fee yawmin dhee masghabah
(Or feeding on a day of severe hunger)
يَتِيمًا ذَا مَقْرَبَةٍ
Yateeman dha maqrabah
(An orphan of near relationship)
أَوْ مِسْكِينًا ذَا مَتْرَبَةٍ
Aw miskeenan dha matrabah
(Or a poor person in misery)
ثُمَّ كَانَ مِنَ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالصَّبْرِ وَتَوَاصَوْا بِالْمَرْحَمَةِ
Thumma kana min al-ladhina amanu wa tawasaw bis-sabri wa tawasaw bil-marhamah
(And then he became of those who believed and advised one another to patience and advised one another to compassion.)
أُو۟لَـٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَابُ ٱلْمَيْمَنَةِ
Ulaaa’ika ashabul maymanah
(Those are the companions of the right.)
وَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ بِـٰٓيَٰتِنَا هُمْ۟ أَصْحَابُ ٱلْمَشْئَمَةِ
Waladhina kafaru bi ayatina hum ashabul mash’amah
(But those who disbelieved in Our signs – they are the companions of the left.)
